How The Rumor Started

Lauren Conrad and Jason Wahler met while the filming of Laguna Beach: The Real O.C.. They were on-again/off-again for many months but in May had committed to making their relationship a serious priority. Unfortunately, Jason was addicted to more than instant celebrity and began partying all over Hollywood. Lauren finally got tired of reading about his arrests and broke up with him in August 2006. While the breakup was shocking, it was as polite as a breakup featured on a reality tv show could be, and the couple remained friends. Which made the rumor that hit the internet in April 2007 all the more shocking. Gossip blogs were the first to report that they were tipped off to the tape's existence and refused to name their source. Both Jason and Lauren denied the tape existed nor was one ever recorded via their publicists. Some blogs released details and said that Jason's nickname for Lauren was "beef curtains", which is slang for female genitalia.

Lauren, catching the worst in the press, released an official statement about the whole incident on her website:
"I am posting this note on my website regarding the reports that have circulated on the internet this morning. Jason and I would like to make it clear that we did not make a tape with us having sex. Jason and I are both shocked and hurt that people would say such horrible things about us. I can't believe that somebody would go to such great lengths to try to damage my reputation. I feel very grateful and blessed to have friends and family to support me at this time. I would especially like to thank all my fans for standing by me."

As Seen On Tv

Speculation on gossip blogs continued until the next season of The Hills started. The actual episode itself showed how the gossip that circulated for months beforehand hit full mass. A mutual friend of both Heidi and Lauren, Jenn Bunney, spoke with Heidi one day about the rumors. Heidi tells Jenn that the rumors were started by Brody Jenner. Jenn Bunney takes this info, in true instigator fashion, and runs straight to Lauren with this gossip. Lauren decides to avoid the gossip circle and goes straight to Brody to ask if it's true. He readily denies he has anything to do with the rumor and confesses that he knows Spencer Pratt is behind the rumor. When Lauren realizes her former best fried is trying to protect her boyfriend while hurting someone else close to her, all that was left was the eventual catfight.

While out at Les Deux, Heidi decides to go up and talk to Lauren. A fight, dramatic enough to get the attention of every gossip mag, broke out with the cameras filming. Lauren confronted Heidi about the sex tape rumors that Spencer started.

The Aftermath

When the episode aired showing the confrontation between Lauren and Heidi, an entry appeared on Heidi's website titled The Truth. The entry that appeared on October 16, 2007 contained just one sentence: Me and Spencer did spread the false rumors about Lauren's sex tape. Seeing as Heidi rarely admits to things she is caught on camera doing, it seemed odd that the grammar challenged entry was something she'd write. A few hours later, the entry was gone and in its place was a blog entry titled "My blog got hacked!!!!!!" The new entry said that the confession entry from before was a fake and her site was hacked.

Spencer Pratt has kept the rumor going. He and Heidi both appeared on Tyra Banks' talk show to talk about the situation. Spencer told Tyra that "I know for 100% fact it did exist – 1000%!". Heidi told Tyra that the tape was "not a rumor. From what I have heard from confirmed sources; her ex-boyfriend was going around trying to sell it."

Both Lauren and Jason deny the tape's existence. Jason has also stated he never made any comments about Lauren in that kind of manner when asked about the "beef curtains" comment. Even Spencer and Heidi, who both say they are 1000% positive the tape exist admit to never seeing it.
