First Trip To Rehab
The only thing that has ever rivaled Keith Urban's love of music was his love of drugs. Once he moved to the United States in the 90's, he became frustrated with the music scene. He had hits back home in Australia but couldn't seem to break into the US market. In 1998, he finally was on the right path musically but heading down the wrong road personally. He became more than a casual cocaine user. He began freebasing coke in a rundown house in Nashville. He was hitting rock bottom, pushing everyone away from him and wondering if he'd survive each night. It took reaching the point where he was crawling around the floor of his home looking for rock cocaine while covered in sweat to finally convince Keith he needed help. He still took another 3 days to binge before checking himself into Cumberland Heights rehabilitation center outside Nashville, Tennessee. He took the time he needed to get clean and poured himself into his music after he left the center.
Heading to Betty Ford
Unfortunately, his problem with drugs came back with a vengeance in 2006. Keith checked himself into the Betty Ford Clinic in the United States less than 6 months after marrying Nicole Kidman for alcohol addiction. For months there was speculation that Keith had replaced his addiction to cocaine with alcohol. His new wife visited him as much as possible and he left rehab in January 2007. He has been virtually alcohol free since his release and attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings regularly no matter where he's touring at. Keith was involved in an accident while heading to an AA meeting near his home in Sydney, Australia. He was trying to avoid the paparazzi that were following him and make his meeting on time when he lost control of his motorcycle. He swerved to miss a car and skidded off his bike. Keith was quick to let people know that the paparazzi that was following him immediately dropped the camera and ran to help him.
