Marriages
On January 3, 2004, Britney Spears married her childhood friend, Jason Alexander, in Las Vegas. Spears submitted an annulment complaint stating that the marriage should end because she “lacked understanding of her actions to the extent that she was incapable of agreeing to marriage because before entering into the marriage the Plaintiff and Defendant did not know each others likes and dislikes, each others desires to have or not have children, and each others desires as to State of residency." The marriage was annulled a mere fifty-five hours after it happened.
In 2004, Spears began dating her backup dancer and rapper Kevin Federline. At that time, Federline's girlfriend, actress Shar Jackson, was heavily pregnant with their second child. Jackson accused Spears of breaking up their family. Spears and Federline were followed by UPN camera crews during this time period, filming their reality show, Britney and Kevin: Chaotic. In July 2004, three months after they met, Spears and Federline announced their engagement. They were married in a non-denominational ceremony in September of that year.
Spears gave birth to their first child, Sean Preston Federline, on September 14, 2005. Their second child, Jayden James Federline, was born September 12, 2006. Spears and Federline received a lot of criticism during their relationship. There were rumors of K-Fed partying with other women in Las Vegas. Few people were surprised when, on November 7, 2006, Spears filed for divorce from Federline, citing “irreconcilable differences.” She requested legal and physical custody of the children, with Federline receiving visitation rights. Federline, who claimed to be “surprised” by the filing, counterfiled just a few days later, requesting full custody of the children with visitation rights for Spears. Despite the allegedly “ironclad prenup”, this was the first sign that the divorce would not be an amicable dissolution of the marriage.
Britney’s Bizarre Behavior
After her divorce from Federline, Spears began to act more and more erratically. She dressed sloppily, began to party nonstop and her parenting abilities were often called into question. She was photographed driving with her son on her lap, and with her children’s car seats facing forward. Spears collapsed of exhaustion on New Year’s Eve, and was photographed dancing at a bar only in her bra and panties. On February 16, 2007, she checked into rehab at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Center in Antigua, only to check out less than 24 hours later. The next day she shaved her own head with clippers when the salon staff refused to do it. She also got two more tattoos, a cross on her lower hip and red and pink lips on her wrist. The tattoos were of dubious quality, which is of little surprise considering they only cost the starlet $80. On February 20, Spears checked into rehab again, this time at a facility in Malibu, California. She spent less than the usual 45 days in treatment, leaving treatment after just under a month.
January 2008 Breakdowns
On January 3, 2008, Britney Spears was involved in a police standoff at her home when she locked herself in a room with one of her children and refused to hand the child over to her ex, Kevin Federline. Spears was transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for evaluation as she was suspected to have been under the influence of an unknown substance. She was later found to be sober at the time of the incident. While hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai, Spears spoke in a British accent. She was also placed under suicide watch. Television psychiatrist Dr. Phil McGraw visited Spears while she was hospitalized.
On January 31, 2008 Britney Spears was involuntarily hospitalized again.
Restraining Order Filed Against Sam Lufti
On February 5, 2008, Britney Spears’ mother, Lynne Spears, filed and obtained a restraining order against Britney’s manager, Osama “Sam” Lufti. In the document, Spears described an extremely strange and worrying visit to her daughter’s house. During the visit, the house was left unguarded by security and was instead surrounded by paparazzi. Lufti had apparently cut all of the phone lines in the house. Spears also accused Lufti of drugging Britney by trying to ply her with alcohol with crushed pills in it. He admitted to grinding her regular medication. Lynne disclosed that two of the pills that Britney was prescribed were Seroquel and Risperdal, drugs often prescribed to depressive and bipolar patients. Britney later said she had taken Adderall that night as well. Britney’s mom also alluded to the belief that she and her friend Jackie had been drugged with Adderall, saying they both felt as if they had “drank coffee.”
At one point during the evening, Britney disappeared upstairs with Lufti and returned downstairs a few minutes later in notably peppier spirits, insisting that Jackie and Lynne accompany her on a midnight lipstick-purchasing adventure at Rite-Aid. Her mother said she “broke in and out of her British accent” during the trip. Britney was followed by paparazzi on the trip there and back.
When Lynne Spears tried to leave Britney’s house at 4 am, Lufti blocked her car in. Throughout the night he told Lynne that he without him Britney would die and he would “piss on her grave,” and that he would make the family name “shit in the papers.” He also accused Britney of being an “unfit mother” and a “whore.” In the document, Spears’ mother also confirmed that Britney is in fact dating paparazzi Adnan Ghalib. Ghalib told Lynne that Lufti would hide Britney’s cell phones and dog London from her, pretending to find the pup and being Britney’s big hero at the end.
Hospital Release
Britney Spears was released from the Los Angeles County General Hospital on Wednesday, February 6th, after only a week of treatment. She left in spite of her primary psychiatrist’s advisement not to do so. Her parents delivered a statement after their daughter’s release saying that Britney’s life was at risk, describing her as “an adult child in the throes of a mental health crisis.”
